The whales, dolphins and porpoises form a group known as “cetaceans", from the Latin root cetus (great marine animal) and the Greek root ketos (marine monster). Currently, there are approximately 85 recognized species, which represent a great variety of forms and sizes, ranging from 1 meter in length (Tucuxi and Hector´s dolphin) to 30 meters (Blue whale). They live in all oceans and main rivers of the world, in warm or polar-cold waters.
