Cetaceans’ activities regulation: Dissemination of the Decree
In July of 2005, a new regulation for whale/dolphin-watching activities was approved in Costa Rica. This decree gives the people involved in these activities six months to adapt to the new rules (i.e. until January of 2006). In December of 2005 hotel managers were informally interviewed in Drake Bay. It was noted that most of them needed details about the decree and showed interest in learning more about it.
Tourist guides from AGUINADRA (Naturalist Drake Bay Guides’ Association) asked for a meeting to be informed about this new decree. This dolphin-watch decree took 3 years to be approved but it won’t be useful until local people know about it and follow its regulations.
KETO, in collaboration with Vida and MarViva, had the first informative meeting on March the 4th. There were 40 people such as boat navigators, tourists’ guides, and hotel managers in the tourism business at Drake Bay in attendance. Click here for details
