Professionals from KETO currently support the Management Plan developing for the Caño Island Biological Reserve. This is an initiative of the Osa Conservation Area (ACOSA), National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC-MINAE), ACOSA Regional Board (CORAC-Osa) and the Latin American School of Protected Areas of the University for International Cooperation (ELAP-UCI), as the leader. Several NGO' s support this plan, which will orient the actions that must be made in a protected area in order to conserve it, always taking into account the interests from the communities and ACOSA’s institutional capacity to carry it out.
Marine Rescue Program-Workshop # 1
A workshop for the National Coastguard Service of Puntarenas was made on August 22nd. The main goal was to train the personnel from this service to attend the cetaceans’ strandings in order to ensure the animal welfare during this phenomenon. During this workshop, the participants also learned how to recognize the species of cetaceans involved, based on physical characteristics. We had a total of 14 participants.

Campaign For Costa Rican whales
The Costa Rican Coalition for Whales was formed by more than 13 NGO’s in 2006 and acted actively since 2007 in order to assist and vote at the last International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting. We will keep trying to avoid the extinction of the Costa Rican whales through hunting in international waters. The block of countries integrated by Costa Rica, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama and Peru obtained the approval for a resolution in favor of the nonlethal use of cetaceans in IWC’s last meeting, held in Anchorage.
