Leatherback Conservation Project in Junquillal Pacific Beach
Responsible: Damian Martinez, Valerie Guthrie, Gabriel France
Previously, the community of Junquillal has shown interest in the conservation of marine turtles, especially since December 2004. The community has participated actively demonstrating environmental and social results in the last 3 years:
Virtually disappeared looting in Junquillal, a non-protected beach
Sense of pride raised in the community in respect to the conservation of these species which have been integrated as a component of their identity.
Baula Boys organized to assist in maintenance of gardens, beaching patrol, data collection and egg transfer to hatcheries.
Women of the community have begun an initiative for rural tourism.
The main goal of this conservation project is to encourage organized groups to maintain the Junquillal beaches under appropriate conditions for the protection and facilitation of leatherback, olive and black turtles’ nesting and hatching and lead to sustainable development initiatives through the conservation of marine turtles.
